Currently a freelance writer, Bryan Chitwood was the managing editor of Canoe & Kayak Magazine from '97 to '99. Before moving to Seattle to take that job, he lived in Bend, Oregon, where he was a freelance writer and worked as a trip leader for the Bend Metro Parks & Recreation District. There he worked with the seniors program, leading cycling, hiking and canoeing trips in the summer and cross-country ski trips in the winter. He also satisfied a life-long goal by serving on the Bend City Council twice, experiencing political life first hand instead of writing about it as a reporter. He started out in community journalism in Virginia before moving to Oregon and getting involved in the outdoor industry. His first newspaper job was at a tiny twice-weekly paper that some say was so far out in the middle of nowhere in Southwest Virginia that the Grand Ole Opry didn't get there 'til Tuesday…since it broadcasts on Saturday night, that's an old joke! He later worked for a paper in Northern Virginia and managed to win a few awards before heading off to Oregon.

Bryan met his wife Monica in Oregon on a rafting trip on the Deschutes River, and was married about a year later at the Reno Wedding Chapel in beautiful Reno, Nevada. Monica prefers sea kayaking to canoeing or rafting these days, and since their two dogs go everywhere with them, she usually paddles solo in her sea kayak while Bryan struggles to keep up in the canoe with the dogs and gear. Being back in North Carolina has rekindled Bryan's interest in the pursuits of his youth. Having hunted quite extensively as a kid, he's now training his first pointing dog, a French Brittany named Sissy. They get outdoors often in pursuit of bobwhite quail, and also head to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia (near his hometown) in pursuit of ruffed grouse.
